Days of the week

This topic is very important to work, because is a natural thing for kids and something they are in contact. When learners are interested in a topic they are motivated to acquire language to communicate. For this reason is better to teach the language is seen in reallife situations in which students can acquire the language.

Everyday we can start to ask the children what day is today? And what day will be tomorrow? This routine helps the children to memorize the days of the week and to learn the order.

One activity is the train of the week. This activity consists in order the days of the week; we will use different wagons for the different days. They should put one card with one day of the week in the correct wagon. Each wagon will have the day written in Spanish.



Other activity can be to make series. With this activity we get that the children work the order of the days. We have seven card with the days, the pupils should order it in correct order. 

The wall charts and poster are good resources in this case. Wall charts comprise a sequence of events related in time or space. Posters lack the sequential structure of wall charts. You can also use a calendar in English.

The colours


First we can use the natural method; we show crayons and say the colour of each crayon. With this activity we want that children associate the colour with the name of that colour.

Then we can ask children can you find one thing red (or other colour) in class? Children have to find an object with the colour that the teacher has said and take it, and then all check if the child has done well.

Other activity is to colour. We give the children a drawing of numbers where each number will have to be painted a colour, for example 1 red. We achieve that the children to identify the colour with the writing.






A game we can do is put in the floor rings of colours. A child tries to catch his classmates, but if they get into the ring of colour that the teacher says the child is saved.

The songs are interesting resources because its are repetitive and rhythmical and are a good motivation. According to the trace theory with the song the children memorized better and songs allow to learn about how sounds connect and run together.

The parts of the body


The first thing that we can do is to name each part of the body and then children repeat it in own body. How the natural method says is better if we learn words with the objects they were referred to. Other method what emphasized this idea is the Audiolingual method; consist in repeating words and sentences.



But, how Piaget highlights, children are sense-makers, they like to be active. For this reason the game Simon says is a good activity for work of parts of the body. This game is easy to do and the kids love it. You can check that they understand that you say and that they can distinguish the parts of the body.
In the game one of participants directs the action; this child should say the sentence Simon says that you touch followed by a body part, like your arm, your nose or your foot. The rest of the class should do it, if they don’t touch the correct part of body, they will be eliminated.  



Other good resource is use songs. In the Total Physical Response focused on the relationship between kinaesthetic and memory. It is based on the fact that we memorise something better when it is related to movement.
One famous song that helps us to teach the parts of the body is Head and Shoulders
